Melin Homes provides 50 new affordable homes for local people
Work is well underway on a £6.8 Million development of 50 much-needed affordable homes in Abergavenny, thanks to a successful partnership between Melin Homes, Monmouthshire Council and national housing developer Barratt Homes.
Barratt are building the homes for Melin and, once complete, the scheme on Merthyr Road in the town will provide 16 two-bedroom houses, 18 three-bedroom houses, 4 four-bedroom houses and 12 one-bedroom apartments.
Up to half of the homes will be available for sale under Melin’s low-cost home ownership scheme and the remainder will be available on a neutral tenure basis which allows applicants the opportunity to rent or buy.
The homes are being built to Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes which sets the overall sustainability and energy efficiency of new build homes.
They will be highly insulated and will contain a range of energy saving features including low energy lighting, eco-flushing toilets and external water butts. Some will also have solar and photo voltaic panels. All of these features will help to reduce running costs for residents.
Mark Gardner, Chief Executive of Melin said: “Providing high quality, affordable homes for people who need them is what Melin is all about and we are delighted that our new homes in Abergavenny are nearing completion. In addition to providing rental opportunities, it’s great to know that, even during these difficult economic times, our low-cost home ownership scheme will help people to buy their own homes”.
Nick Ramsay, AM for Monmouth said: "I am delighted that Melin Homes and Monmouthshire Council are able to deliver affordable homes where local people struggle to meet market prices."
This superb scheme of 50 affordable homes in Abergavenny is yet another example of Melin and Monmouthshire County Council working together to find a sustainable solution to our housing problems. Well done Monmouthshire and Melin Homes!"
Councillor Brian Hood, Monmouthshire Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: “This is a fine example of partnership working between the public and private sector which will result in homes for people who need them. It has also helped to support the building industry during recent hard times.
Since April 2009 Melin has invested £19 million in building affordable homes and have completed 129 to date. 79 of these were for rent and we also created 40 opportunities for people to buy their own home thanks to our low-cost home ownership schemes. We also helped 10 families with Mortgage Rescue
Melin’s properties at Whitecastle will be ready for occupation from Summer this year.
