Prestigious Gold Award for Community Housing Cymru

Community Housing Cymru has achieved the prestigious Gold Investors in People award, the most successful framework for business improvement through people in the UK.

Community Housing Cymru joins only two other organisations in Wales who are eligible to use and display the sought-after Gold Investors in People logo and plaque, and enjoy its benefits. CHC, who currently employ fourteen members of staff, formally committed to the award in August 2009 after 12 months of working towards Investors in People (IiP) with their advisor, Sue Rowlands. The award has ten indicators which cover areas such as Management Effectiveness, Recognition and Reward and Involvement and Empowerment.

The assessment revealed that staff enjoyed working at CHC and the atmosphere of openness in which they operate, had lots of learning opportunities and their terms and conditions focused genuinely on achieving work-life balance.

Nick Bennett, Chief executive of Community Housing Cymru said: “All staff and members have the right to feel proud of achieving gold Investors in People status. This is the perfect launching pad for us as we set about forming a group structure with Care and Repair Cymru and the Centre for Regeneration Excellence in Wales (CREW). We want to be a cluster of co-operation which supports innovative social enterprise in housing, care and regeneration and we can only continue to do that with great people who we continue to invest in.”

Phillipa Knowles, HR and communications manager at CHC added: “We applied for Investors not in the pursuit of an award, but to benchmark our people policies and strategies to ensure that we were developing, supporting and managing our staff in the best way possible. It is an honour to be one of only three organisations in Wales to achieve the Gold standard and we are really proud to be recognised as an Investor in People.

As an organisation that invests heavily in the learning and development of our staff, the award made us focus our attention on evaluating the impact of these activities on our business bottom line. By being able to not only identify skills and knowledge improvements as a result of learning and development activities, we were also able to identify around £30k worth of savings gained as a result of these new skills being developed by staff, which will have a huge impact in terms of delivering more to our members.

My personal thanks must go to everyone at CHC who have all had a part to play in our success, to our assessor Mavis Elliott-Smith who made the assessment an enjoyable experience for all those involved, to Nick Bennett and the Management Team for their support and commitment and finally to Sue Rowlands, our IiP consultant, without whose help, support and commitment would have made this process a lot harder and longer.”
